How can you go wrong with a combination like that? Jerry is a rough haired Irish Terrier that has ALL the terrier traits in his DNA. Rough, tough, sometimes scoundrel and sometimes clown sometimes protector and sometimes attacker. Jack London has been one of my favorite authors for almost fifty years since I read my first London book "Call of the Wild" when I was about twelve years old. Needles to say I am a dog lover and in that book Buck was to me the king of dogs and the book itself the king of dog tales. Since I have now read "Jerry of the Islands" I may have to retract that statement as Jerry had my undivided attention throughout the story. Like Buck, Jerry shares his adventures with a wide range of characters some good some terribly bad. You think you know where the story is heading then it takes a turn and heads off in a direction quite different but exciting. After "Jerry of the Islands" I just had to read "Michael, Brother of Jerry". Racially sensitive individuals won't appreciate the language in the book but keep in mind this book was written at the turn of the 20th century and it obviously how people spoke back then. At least people in the South Seas anyway. I highly recommend this book if you like dogs, the South Sea Islands, sailing, and adventure. It's a story every bit an equal to "Call of the Wild".Product details

A classic for all dog lovers
South Seas adventure told through the eyes of an Irish Terrier.
If you love animals like I do this is a must read plus it has a happy ending
Good story
I can completely understand why many people overlook Jack London's works that use offensive and derogatory language in regards to a persons ethnicity, however if you take a second to understand the story the author is telling, the language is easier take.
In the story, you must remember that when London uses the term for white people, he means "white" in the biblical sense, not caucasian. The white characters in his write, are what we know in this day and age to be "invisible"
You must remember, in this story when London uses the "n-word" (forgive me for not repeating the term, at the moment I am all but on fire due to the sad state of unequal rights that have crept back into America via the evil tyranny that becomes of the govt. without the separation of church and state) when London uses the "n-word" he does not mean African descended. He means a visible character, what we understand today to be a living being with a body of flesh.
The book distinguishes humans from the divine, and includes pets of divine ownership.
Because of the current state sometimes I wish he would have wrote a story where he referred to the humans as white-trash, because of the atrocities committed by bigoted idiots who were too stupid to understand that white people are not any more invisible than any other race I too was a bit sensitive to the language used, however the story is still there with the authors intent and meets or exceeds London's characteristic talent with his gift in the crafting of letters to words. This story of words paints the brilliant pictures we have come to know his works by and as usual, the images or organized in a sequence that gives a better motion picture than hollywood can produce.
Me being the owner of Tazz my third Irish Terrier-- all males . This was a very insightful look into the mind body and soul of this breed. Loyal, loving intelligent and ferocious to any that threaten his or his or his masters space.
Once you have owned one , no other dog will do.
Jerry of the Islands is a good book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, it is not for everyone. If you can get past the archaic, and sometimes objectionable use of the language. You will like this book.
In the author's defense, this story was written in 1914, and the terms used at that time were considered to be more acceptable.
I like this book because I used to own an Irish Terrier, and I considered the dog to be the most splendid animal in all the world. This book brought back memories of the types of things that my dog would, and would not do. So if you have a fondness for dogs, especially Irish Terriers. You will enjoy this book.
